When Caitlin Clark, the WNBA’s first-round selection, was left off of the U.S. women’s basketball team’s roster for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, fans were not happy earlier this week. USA Basketball has now answered. It all boils down to the player selection criteria, according to Jen Rizzotti, chair of the selection committee, who spoke with the Associated Press. One component was experience. “And when you base your decision on criteria, there were other players that were harder to cut because they checked a lot more boxes,” Rizzotti stated. “Then sometimes it comes down to position, style of play for Cheryl [Reeve] and then sometimes a vote.” Clark stated that being selected for the Olympic squad is a dream and that she now has something to strive for. Clark is recognized for bringing millions of new fans to women’s college and professional basketball games this year.
